NECK COOLERS By Debra Michaelson
I first discovered neck coolers about 5 years ago. I had gone to my first threshing bee with four other friends about 3 hours from home. We borrowed a van so we would be comfortable and set off. The day ended up being about 105 degrees and very little shade. I do not do well with heat, and felt I was going to die from it. I had brought sunscreen lotion along, but didn’t realize how much the heat would affect me. Then my friend Rita discovered these neck coolers among the vendors out there. Here was this lady sitting under a large tarp selling these neck coolers. She had them soaking in ice water, selling them for $5.00 each. Let me tell you at that moment I would have paid twice that amount if need be. It saved me from heat stroke! Ever since then, I never go anywhere in the summer without one packed along. And sometimes I need them in the winter too…as I have come to that point in my life when I have these hot flashes. At Natures Home and Garden there are many styles of neck coolers to choose from that are stylish and very reasonably priced. I’ve worn them to work, and get comments on how cute my neck scarf is. The neck cooler comes flat with crystals inside. To activate the cooling crystals, you simply soak the neck cooler in water. After around 20 minutes your neck cooler will be ready to be worn. As it is soaking you need to distribute the crystals, which turn into a gel like substance, evenly. DO NOT FREEZE! Freezing will shorten the life span of your crystals. You can however store then in the refrigerator, or pack in a cooler. Have two, wear one and have the other in a cooler for a quick refreshing coolness. If stored properly, these neck coolers will last for years.
